Monsoon arrives in Karnataka, so does water-logging

The South West Monsoon entered Karnataka with a bang with Mangaluru and surrounding areas receiving heavy rains since Monday night.

Several low-lying areas in Mangaluru city, including Kottara Chowki and Ballal Bagh witnessed water logging on the first day of monsoon itself. The circulating area at Mangaluru Central Railway Station was completely inundated with rainwater and overflowing sewage.

The Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Karnataka for the next five days.

The Opposition is expected to raise the Thoothukudi police firing issue on the first day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session, the police have beefed up security around the Secretariat-Assembly complex. The Opposition party is also expected to raise several cut motions to highlight the plight of the public on various fronts.

Construction of the much-delayed Signature Bridge picked up pace after the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) endorsed the additional estimate of around ₹231 crore of the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) to complete the project.

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) had sought the CPWD’s “expert opinion” after the DTTDC submitted a revised estimate of ₹1,575 crore for the project, which was announced in 2004.

Violence returned to protests against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s government on Monday when riot police confronted protesters and students seized a university.

Students demanding greater democracy and Ortega’s resignation took over the Engineering University in Managua, the capital.
