Woman attacked with pickaxe during terrifying carjacking

A woman was ambushed by man before he hit her in the head with a pickaxe in a terrifying car jacking at a petrol station in Melbourne's south-east.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, was leaving the Coles Express petrol station on Springvale and Governor roads in Braeside when she was confronted by a man wielding a pickaxe at about 3.30am on May 17.

It is believed the man, who was wearing a dark hooded jumper at the time of the attack, had been hiding in a garden area at the service station before he attacked the woman and demanded her car keys.

When she refused to hand them over, a struggle ensued before the man hit the victim in the head with the pickaxe and managed to grab her keys.

The man then drove off in the victim’s white 2016 Mercedes Benz C200 sedan, which carries the registration AKL 202.

It is understood the victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.

“She caught a whack to the head with the axe in the struggle," Southern Metro Crime Team detective Senior Constable Gordon Mcsephney said on Tuesday.

“The car hasn’t turned up since or been involved in any offending."

He described the attack as “pretty calculated".

Detectives have released an image and facial composite of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is perceived to be of Islander appearance, police said.

They have also released an image of a car similar to the stolen vehicle.

Police urged anyone who sees the car or has any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.
