Police suspect personal enmity; manhunt on for the rest

A 27-year-old man was hacked to death in north-west Delhi’s Shakurpur by a group of people on Saturday night, the police said on Sunday.

Four juveniles involved in the attack have been apprehended, they added.

The police received a PCR call regarding a scuffle in Shakurpur following which a team reached the spot.

The injured person was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The body was shifted to a mortuary for post-mortem and his family members were informed.

“The deceased, Rakesh, resided in the same area with his family. Rakesh was on the way to a grocery shop when he was attacked by a group of youth. Most of the accused are juveniles. He had several stab injuries all over the body,” said a senior police officer.

Rakesh’s family members said that on May 25, his uncle who lived in the same locality had died.

After performing the last rites, all the family members came back home.

‘Accused were armed’

Rakesh’s sister-in-law had asked him to buy vegetables for dinner following which he went out of the house when the incident happened.

“My brother-in-law ran for life after being attacked in full public view. He was chased and again attacked but no one came to his rescue. The accused were armed with swords and knives. The incident happened in front of hundreds of locals. They witnessed it but no one intervened,” said Durga, Rakesh’s sister-in-law.

A few days back, Rakesh had some argument with one of the accused, the police said. The murder might be fall out of an old enmity and over supremacy in the area, they added.

‘No criminal records’

“We have identified all the accused involved in the murder. We will soon nab those who are absconding. Neither the deceased nor the accused have any previous criminal records,” said Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West).

“The body was handed over to family members after post-mortem and last rites were performed under police presence,” Ms. Khan added.
