Air-travel secrets: How you can score first-class upgrades

Air travel can both be blissful and a nuisance, depending on a lot of things. And if you happen to get a free upgrade, nothing like it.
But how easy is it to get an upgrade for absolutely free?
Air travel experts told a website how you can increase your chances of getting an upgrade and travelling in luxury.

1. Arrive early
Getting to the gate early may better your chances of scoring an upgrade, experts say.
"Early bird gets the worm works here," said Carolyn Paddock, a former flight attendant and founder of Life in Flight, a travel coaching website.
2. Go out of your way to be kind to airline employees
Gate agents and flight crews are often treated poorly by passengers, and even the administration. To stand out from the other passengers, try and be nice to the airline employees to score an upgrade, experts say.
One story that an expert narrated is how his father would often carry chocolates to hand out to flight staff.

3. Have a flexible travel schedule
Taking a seat on a different flight may be key to getting an upgrade, travel experts say. If you've arrived early, politely approach the flight attendants and volunteer to move to a different flight if there's a better seating option, experts said.
While companies often offer vouchers for volunteers to switch flights, they can include a seat upgrade as well, experts said.
4. Be willing to spend some money
Just ahead of takeoff, upgrades may be available for a bit of additional money. The upgrades may also be available a couple of days ahead of the flight.
Keeping a tab on the offers of an airline might also help secure a relatively cheaper upgrade.

Dress well
Wearing appropriate attire for air travel isn't as difficult as it used to be, but dressing nicely still can up your chances of getting upgraded.
"If they have to upgrade someone, they're not going to put some slob up in first class," said Johnny DiScala.
5. Don't check in a bag
Airlines will find it easier to switch your seat or upgrade you - whether it's on the same flight or a different one - if you're traveling without a checked bag, experts say.
"More flexibility will yield more benefits from the airline," Pizzarello said.
6. Travel alone
Travelling on your own can have a lot of perks. The flight is more likely to be open for one seat instead of two or more. That way, an upgrade is that much more likely for a solo traveller.
