In an aim to end water crisis in the state, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed that rainwater harvesting should be made mandatory for new buildings constructed on plots having an area of 500 square feet and more.
According to DNA, the state government has asked for suggestions and objections from the citizens for the excluded plan (Schedule B) of the DP 2034, and the last to file suggestions and objections is June 23. The proposal states that it should be mandatory for new buildings developed or redeveloped on plots having an area of 500 square feet and more to have a water harvesting apparatus. The owners will have options to choose between one or two apparatus depending on the building’s need.
The BMC has also proposed fine for those who fail to install rainwater harvesting apparatus. The proposed fine is at least Rs 1000 per square metre annually. And fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed for buildings constructed over 1000 sq feet plots.
