In Crozet, Brookville scored the game-tying run in the top of the seventh, but Western Albemarle sophomore Garrett Payne ended the Bees’ season with a walk-off double, and WA earned a 3-2 victory in the Region 3C quarterfinals.

Brookville (10-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a sacrifice fly by Jaycob Carwile, but the Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Brookville’s Haydon Almond and two WA hurlers, Payne and Derek Domecq, then combined for five straight innings of scoreless baseball until the seventh. BHS tied the game at 2 off Zach Thompson’s single.

Brookville’s Jared Glinski was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Shannon Tucker, who pitched the final frame, took the loss. BHS stranded seven runners, while WA left eight on base. Brookville ace Haydon Almond threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits. He fanned four and walked five.

Appomattox 14, Gretna 2

Hunter Mohr and Jacob Johnson had three hits apiece, pitcher Henry Rasmussen struck out 12 batters in five innings, and Appomattox moved on to the Region 2C semifinals with a blowout win over the visiting Hawks.

Mohr doubled twice and finished with three RBIs for the Raiders (18-4), who play Dogwood District rival Dan River at Salem’s Kiwanis Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Gretna was led by slugger Cole Rigney who was 2 for 2 with a solo homer. Drew Marr (1 for 3) tripled for the Hawks (9-11).

Rasmussen allowed four hits and one run (earned). He threw 76 pitches, 53 of which went for strikes.

SOFTBALL

Appomattox 7, Dan River 1

The Raiders improved to a stellar 20-1 as pitcher Kaleigh Hackett held the Wildcats to just three hits and also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and a triple.

Haley Drew went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs for Appomattox, which has reeled off 10 straight wins since falling to Nottoway in the first game of a doubleheader on April 23.

James River 9, Nelson 3

In Lovingston, James River raced out to an early lead it never relinquished, ending Nelson’s season in the Region 2C tournament quarterfinals.

James River used a two-run homer from Evie Melvin in the first inning to jumpstart its offense, which put up four runs in the frame. The Knights added three in the third and tacked on one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to cap the scoring.

Nelson (12-6) got three runs back in the third, but they couldn’t muster any more offense.

The Governors got a leadoff double in the first but left the runner stranded and left the bases loaded in seventh. The Knights also turned two inning-ending double plays to limit Nelson’s offense.

Raelyn McGarry went 3 for 4 with a double to lead Nelson, and Ainsley McGarry and Megan Seitz added two hits apiece.

Lakota Lucado and Erin Peery each went 2 for 4 for James River.

Kaitlin Simmons pitched a complete game for the Knights, allowing three runs (all earned) on nine hits, striking out two and walking four.

Sarah McGarry took the loss and gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits.

BOYS SOCCER

Liberty 2, Turner Ashby 0

In Bridgewater, fifth-seeded Liberty overcame No. 4 Turner Ashby (8-8-2) by scoring once each half in the Region 3C tournament quarterfinals.

Porter Flynn and Alex Szinghoffer each scored for the Minutemen (7-10), and Chris Garbarini added an assist.

Liberty will travel to No. 1 Western Albemarle for the region semifinals. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. today.

Western Albemarle beat eighth-seeded Waynesboro 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

Fluvanna County 5, Rustburg 3

The much-improved Red Devils were overcome by three second-half goals by the Flying Flucos, who advanced to the Region 3C semifinals by earning the road victory at Rustburg High.

Flvanna raced out to a 2-0 lead before RHS’ Jacob Morris scored in the 20th minute. Milan Daus then scored on back-to-back Rustburg goals off assists from Nacho Hermida to give the Red Devils a 3-2 lead.

But Fluvanna scored three unanswered goals to take the match. Rustburg keeper Michael Moore had eight saves. The Red Devils end the season at 11-4-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

Liberty 8, Brookville 0

In Bedford, Liberty’s Lydia Young struck early with a goal just five minutes in, and the Minettes routed sixth-seeded Brookville (3-13-1) in the Region 3C tournament quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Liberty scored five times in the first half before tacking on three more goals in the second.

Young, Katherine Thompson and Delaney Snead had two goals apiece for Liberty (10-6-1), and Snead added three assists.

Liberty will travel to No. 2 Western Albemarle for the semifinals today. Western Albemarle beat Rockbridge 8-0 in the quarterfinals.

Appomattox 5, Nelson 1

In Appomattox, Taylor Fulcher scored four goals to lead the host Raiders past Nelson in the Region 2C tournament quarterfinals.

The Raiders scored all five of their goals in the first half. Fulcher sandwiched Cassidy Carter’s unassisted goal in the 19th minute with goals in the third, eighth, 12th and 25th minutes.

Abby Ranson assisted on two goals, and Josey Walton and Summer Natour added one assist apiece for Appomattox (18-0).

Senior Grace Clair delivered the lone goal, unassisted, for Nelson (6-7-1) in the 48th minute.

Appomattox will play the winner of James River/Eastern Montgomery in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton.

TENNIS

E.C. Glass’ Megan Knight is fighting for a chance to advance in the Region 4D singles championship and will face off in the semifinal round against Bassett’s Morgan Scott today.

She’ll be joined by fellow Glass player on the boys side, Wolfgang Ploch, who advanced to the singles championship onday afternoon.

Ploch is joined in the doubles tourney by partner Carter Rennyson. The duo will play in the semifinal round today. All 4D play is scheduled to begin today at 11 a.m. at Crosswhite Athletic Center.

In the Region 3C girls tournament at Heritage, Brookville’s Kaitlyn Swan is currently in the semifinal round and will play Western Albemarle’s Hannah Kearns today at 11 a.m. at HHS. Swan earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Rustburg’s Audrey Carlson on Monday.
