With total area of around 236,800 square kilometers, approximately 70 percent of the landscape in Laos is mountainous, reaching a maximum height of 2,820 meters in Xieng Khouang Province.

The northern Laos terrains and the regions neighboring to Vietnam, in particular, are subjugated by rough mountains.

In the west of the region, the Mekong River is the main geographical feature and forms a natural border with Thailand in some areas.

To build up the sector, in 2015, Lao PDR partnered with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to introduce a Tourism Infrastructure Project. The ADB offered the country with a USD 40 million project loan to assist it putting up tourism infrastructure.

The tourism sector now has only one target audience in mind and that’s China. From last month, a local media report explained that the Lao PDR government is developing certain tourism services to lure more visitors from China in particular.

Also, the development of the tourism sector will generate more job opportunities for the people of Lao PDR and additionally perk up its services sector.

As per the United Nation’s World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism has directly created 114,000 job options being created in Lao PDR. In general, tourism and its related services have added over 385,000 jobs in the country.
