Road-Going Volkswagen I.D. Hatch Will Closely Resemble The Concept

Volkswagen has confirmed that the road-going I.D. hatchback will look very similar to the 2016 concept.

Speaking to Autocar, VW design boss Klaus Bischoff said that little has been changed for the production car.

“The proportions, the design cues and the wheel size are the same as the concept. It looks like the show car. We couldn’t do the camera-system rear-view mirrors for legal reasons, nor the electric door handles due to cost. But other than that, it’s pretty much the same,” Bischoff said.

At least three other VW I.D. models are heading to production

The German brand started building pre-production prototypes in April and recently commenced a 16-month development and testing program. If all goes well, it intends on building the first production-spec models in November 2019 before sales and deliveries commence the following year.

Volkswagen has previously said that its I.D. family of models will all share a common design language, vastly different than those used by the firm’s ICE-powered models. Common design components are tipped to include similar LED headlights and illuminated VW badges.

When it hits the market, the I.D. hatch is expected to come outfitted with a 168 HP electric motor and a battery pack with a maximum range of up to 600 km (373 miles).
