Two cars overturned in a Sunday crash on the Coastal Highway south of Bethany Beach.

Police are investigating the 3:50 p.m. crash in the Route 1 southbound lanes in the areas of Waters Edge Way south of the Indian River Inlet, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin of Delaware State Police.

A 61-year-old man of Selbyville had just completed a u-turn from the northbound lanes, when a 23-year-old of Newark, James I. Windle was driving at a high speed southbound and hit the back of the Selbyville man's car.

The impact caused both cars to overturn before stopping, Austin said.

Both drivers and a passenger were taken to Beebe hospital.

Windle, a 23-year-old woman of Newark in the passenger seat of his car, and the Selbyville man were all wearing seat-belts, said Austin. All three were released with minor injuries.

Windle was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and following too close, Austin said.

As police investigated and cleared the scene, the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed or restricted for approximately two hours.
