Top brass back officers' actions in police shooting death
WA Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Paul Steel has defended the actions of officers who shot a man who was advancing at them with a knife near Mandurah in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The man died a short time later at Peel Health Campus.
Mr Steel said he was confident the two police officers involved, a male sergeant and a female constable, acted within protocols and their training.
"Based on the information I have to date there is nothing that causes me concern," he told reporters.
About 12.20am, officers responded to a report of a man acting suspsicous in the suburb of Wannanup, 83 km south west of Perth.
They arrived to find the man armed with a knife in Rod Court.
Police ordered him to drop the knife, which he did, but then picked up a larger knife and approached the officers.
The officers tried to taser him, which proved ineffective.
"The shot was fired by the officer who was directly at threat," Mr Steel said.
Police administered CPR on the man, who was yet to be formally identified, at the scene, before St John Ambulance took him to Peel Health Campus.
He later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad and Internal Affairs Unit were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The area remains closed to the public as forensic officers attend the scene.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online.
More to come.
