Heavy rain lashes Chitradurga

Heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed Chitradurga town and other taluks for more than six hours on Thursday night. Almost all major roads in the town were flooded with water and power supply was interrupted for more than eight hours as many electricity poles were uprooted in gusty winds.

Davangere-Bengaluru Road in the town was flooded with rainwater due to overflowing storm-water drains. Residents of the town blamed the city municipal council as the officials have not repaired the storm-water drains even after several complaints in the last one-and-a-half years.

Though work on the storm-water rains began a year ago, it has not been completed owing to the negligent attitude of the elected representatives and the officers concerned, the residents said.

Water entered several low-lying areas, including the KSRTC Depot Road, Lakshmi Bazaar, Kelagote, Shankar Theatre Road and JCR Main Road. Vehicular movement on National Highway 4 was also hampered for an hour owing to accumulation of water near the railway bridge. According to official sources, Holalkere taluk received 64 mm of rainfall on Thursday, Challakere 31 mm, Parashurampur 3 mm, Chitradurga 20 mm, Bharamsagar 4.4 mm, Hiriyur 5.4 mm, Molkalmuru 7.2 mm, Rayapur 4.8 mm, Chikjajur 5.2 mm and Hireguntnur 2 mm.
