₹8 lakh solatium sought for ‘victim’ of illegal surrogacy

National SC Commission member promises all help

National SC Commission Member K. Ramulu met the Dalit woman, who claimed to be a victim of an alleged illegal commercial surrogacy procedure performed at a private hospital in the city, at King George Hospital on Friday.

Promising all help to her, Mr. Ramulu demanded that the State government pay a compensation of ₹8 lakh to the woman.

The woman and a few women rights organisations alleged that Padmasri Hospital had trapped her for an illegal commercial surrogacy procedure against the guidelines prescribed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

However, the hospital authorities refuted the allegations saying that it was a move to extort money from the hospital administration.

Report sought

Mr. Ramulu urged the police to submit an initial report within 24 hours and book cases against the hospital management under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

He said the government must constituted a five-member team comprising the members from SC/ST Commission and Women and Child Welfare officials to probe into the allegations.
