Preparing for results: Failures are temporary, say experts

Indore: The CBSE class XII board examination results are likely to be declared next week. The students are anxiously waiting for results with hopes of clearing the examination with flying colours.

Many students slip into depression and some even commit suicide after the results. Preparing students and parents for accepting the result and finding their way towards a happy future, businessman Rajdeep Bagga, ophthalmologist Dr Amit Solanki and psychiatrist Dr Smita Agrawal shared their experience with Free Press. Excerpts

‘Poor result taught me to work harder’

“We often fear how society reacts to our examination results more than our expectations. It is not easy to accept a poor result. I remember not having fared well in the examination and how it affected my school days. I could not clear ninth class in first attempt and it was devastating. I had to change my school to avoid embarrassment.

It was a difficult phase but I kept trying. I was an average student who scored around 50 percentile since childhood. However, bad result in class IX and change of school taught me to work harder with fewer expectations. It paid off when I scored 76 percent in class X board.”

Change number with hard work

“I come from a humble background. I had a dream of becoming a doctor. But it is easy to dream than to achieve it. Results are tougher to face than examinations. I had scored 62.5 percent in class X. Dr DK Tank was willing to sponsor my education looking at my will to succeed and study. However, I could barely get admission in a school in science subject. After repeatedly trying, I got into a school.

I remember being rejected by coaching classes because of my percentage. But today, I know that it was just a number. I changed that number with my hard work to 90 percent. Everything is possible. Your present percentage does not determine your future.”

Try your best and leave the rest

“Parents need to prepare themselves and be willing to accept their child’s result. Parents should not criticise their child in case the result does not meet their expectation. A supportive parent can provide a blossoming environment for a child. A bad result is not the end of the world. There are many options for a student to find a way. One can opt for other fields or repeat a year.

A year is not a very long time. I always tell students – Try your best and leave the rest. Feeling sad and disappointed are momentarily reactions. A student wants to become an engineer. However, his/her class XII marks did not match up. After taking up another field, he realises that he did not like the life of an engineer. So, be positive.
