Four years of government marked by hoaxes and lies, says Singhvi

All India Congress Committee spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Saturday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s four “failed” years in government.

Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, also attended by Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan, Mr. Singhvi said that while the BJP government was busy celebrating four years of governance and power, the country was burning.

Decline of economy

Referring to the BJP as the “Betrayal Janata Party”, Mr. Singhvi said, “Modiji merely used his words to persuade and mislead the people of the country, making various promises but fulfilling none. These four years have been marked by falsities, hoaxes and lies, which have led to the decline of our economy. In the past four years, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India has reduced from 8% to 6.5% and the excise duty rate has increased twelve times.”

Sugar import

He said the agriculture sector has suffered the most.

“Sugarcane is a major crop grown in Maharashtra in surplus. Yet, [sugar] is being imported from Pakistan in large quantities and the Indian farmers have been betrayed by the government. Further, 15 lakh jobs have been lost due to demonetisation, and till now, around 3.10 crore people are unemployed in India. The flawed GST, mismanagement of the banking system and the mistake of demonetisation have caused tremendous hardships to the people,” he said.

According to Mr. Singhvi, the government had promised huge investments in future projects, but projects worth around ₹13.5 crore have remained untouched.

“The ego-driven BJP government does not believe in the holistic progress of the country and is only here to satisfy its own greed,” the Congress spokesperson said.
