RANCHI: CPI (Maoist) rebels killed Kishun Sao alias Sawji and his wife Suhagini Hembram on suspicion that he was a police informer near Ataki village under Madhuban police station area on Thursday night. Police said that a group of Maoists forcibly took away the couple from their house in Baradih village around 5.30pm on Thursday.

The couples bodies were found on the road on Friday morning with Maoist posters scattered all around them. One of the posters read that people should step up the campaign to identify police informers and punish them. The bodies, which bore multiple injury marks on the neck, have been for autopsy. An extensive operation was also launched in the area to nab the culprits.

Giridih SP Surinder Kumar Jha said: "Sao worked for CPI (Maoist) and was also sent to jail for it. After coming out of jail, he became a staunch supporter of the rebels and provided logistical support for their activities," .

He added that Maoists' claims that he was police informer were incorrect. "Maoists have this habit of killing their own colleagues and other innocent people and then blaming the police for it. It is matter of investigation why the couple was killed," the SP said.

Police believe there could be various reasons for the murder. "He may have been killed due to a dispute among the rebels. It is also possible that he may have been thinking of leaving the outfit. His wife was killed as she was with her husband at the time of the incident," an officer said. He said locals have not provided much information related to the case.
