Delaware State Police have identified the pedestrian killed in a crash around 12:30 a.m. Friday in Dewey Beach.

Peter M. Rudnicki, 22, of Bethesda, Maryland, was struck and killed by a 56-year-old Lewes man who was driving north on Coastal Highway in a 2012 Hyundai Accent in the right lane near the intersection of Keybox Road, according to a release.

Rudnicki was walking on the northbound side near the intersection when, police said, for an unknown reason he walked into the path of the Hyundai.

The Lewes man was unable to move out of the way and struck Rudnicki, who was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel, police said.

The roadway was dark, and Rudnicki was not carrying a light nor was he in a marked crosswalk when he was struck, police said. Alcohol and unsafe speeds were deemed not to be a contributing factor on the driver's behalf, nor did alcohol seem to be a role for the pedestrian, police said.

The driver was properly restrained, and he was not injured as a result of the crash.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Master Cpl. K. Argo at 302-644-5020. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or via the internet at http://www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
