Uttarakhand Board of School Education (UBSE) high school examination topper Kajal Prajapati and intermediate examination topper Divyanshi Raj are from ordinary background but have determination to excel in life. Both the girls hail from Udham Singh Nagar district.

Intermediate topper Divyanshi’s father is a computer operator in a sugar factory whereas high school topper Kajal’s father runs a small workshop in Khatima.

Divyanshi wants to become an IAS officer while Kajal an engineer. Divyanshi studies in GIC Jaspur but her family belongs to Adalatpur, a village in Uttar Pradesh. She said she studied 6-7 hours daily but, never thought she would score 98.40 per cent and will get top on the merit list.

Divyanshi, however, was expecting her name in the merit list. She said she cycled 6 km daily to reach her college.

“I kept distance from cell phone and TV before and during examination. I studied in a planned way. I had fixed target to come in merit list but it is surprising for me to get my name on top of the list,” said Divyanshi.

“I want to pursue for coaching for IIT and then want to become an IAS officer because one has many opportunities to serve the nation and society,” she said, adding she had ranked 13th in high school examination.

High school topper Kajal, a student of Rana Pratap GIC, Khatima, also belongs to a normal family. Her father runs an agricultural related workshop and her mother is a homemaker.

She wants to become an engineer. “My cousins Kaushal and Sheetal got their name in merit list in high school and inter. Inspired by their performance, I wanted to come in the merit list, so I studied 9-10 hours a day.”

Sachin Chand, a resident of Chhinki village, Khatima, who got second position in intermediate board, want to become an army officer. His father Ashok Chand works in a private firm.

Education minister Arvind Pandey, who belongs to Udham Singh Nagar district, said: “Results reflect hard work and dedication of the students.”

Pandey, who represents Gadarpur constituency in the state assembly, expressed happiness that students from the district emerged toppers.

The results also come in as a shot in the arms for the minister who has introduced dress code for teachers, biometric devices for attendance and NCERT books in CBSE-affiliated schools. (With input from Abhinav Madhwal in Haldwani)
