World Thyroid Day observed in Brahmapur

To mark the World Thyroid Day on May 25, the Diabetes and Endocare Clinic, Brahmapur, in association with Christian Hospital, organised an awareness session here.

Chief surgeon of the Christian Hospital Dr Mrinal Nanda was the chief guest, while noted Gynaecologists Dr Puspita Behera, Dr Rohini Pradhan, and Sumita Gorai, Principal of local Nursing College were guests of honour.

Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, consultant endocrinologist from Diabetes and Endocare Clinic, participated the event as the chief speaker.

The event was attended by the doctors, nursing faculties, staff and students. Dr Kota explained to the audience about causes, symptoms and treatment of various thyroid disorders.

Addressing the audience Dr Kota said now 12% of the total Indian population is affected with thyroid disorders. Earlier the cause was iodine deficiency; now these are predominantly due to autoimmuneimbalance.

Dr Kota emphasised upon the fact that timely treatment and periodic follow up with doctor prevents the complications. An educational leaflet on thyroid disorders was also distributed amongst the audience.

Dr Kota speaking on the mechanism to prevent this deadly decease, stressed on the fact that every pregnant lady and newborn children, besides people over 50 years of age, those having family history and those having diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and obesity problems, should undergo thyroid blood testing.

Dr M Nanda from the Christian Hospital lauded the efforts made by Dr Kota to educate both doctors and general public and requested Dr Kota to further carry on with his awareness activities for people from various sectors. Nursing College Principal Gorai offered vote of thanks.
