Manchester United boss Mourinho is ready to spend big this summer as he aims to catch Manchester City next season.
It has been another problematic season at Old Trafford, made worse by ongoings at City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Recent reports have claimed Manchester United are targeting Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, whose future in north London is shrouded in uncertainty.
And the Daily Mail say Mourinho wants that transfer wrapped up because of Liverpool.
The Reds sent shockwaves through the Premier League back in January.
Liverpool made the bold decision to pay £75million for Virgil van Dijk, who arrived from Southampton.
Despite the fee, the Dutchman looks to be a bargain having helped the Reds reach the Champions League final in Kiev.
And the Daily Mail say that, having seen how good Van Dijk has been for Liverpool, United want Alderweireld to have the same impact for them.
United conceded just 28 goals as City won the title this season.

But Mourinho remains unconvinced and may offload several defenders if Alderweireld joins from Tottenham.
Eric Bailly could be sold with his relationship with Mourinho worsening in recent months.
And Chris Smalling and Phil Jones may also be shown the door.
Alderweireld could become one of United’s most-expensive players ever if the Red Devils meet Tottenham’s £75m asking price.
