Mumbai: 13-year-old boy dies after being crushed under school metal gate


Mumbai: A 13-year-old boy died and his 8-year-old friend got injured when they were trying to open a locked iron gate at an under-construction ground of a municipal school on Friday morning in Koparkhaine.

Sunil Adhar Chaudhary (13) and Nilesh alias Sonu Devre (8) were playing cricket at Mahanagar Palika ground in Sector 11 when the incident occurred at 7:45 am. Since the iron-gate was heavy and locked, Sunil tried to open it as the ball had crossed the railing and his friend Nilesh tried to help him open the gate. Since the ground was under-construction and the gates were not properly welded, the heavy gate fell on the two boys.

Their friend Aditya was also present on the ground but escaped as he was standing on the side. Sunil was rushed to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation hospital (NMMC) at Vashi where he succumbed to severe head injuries and was declared dead on arrival. Nilesh was admitted to the NMMC hospital and later shifted to Hiranandani hospital. Sunil and Nilesh are residents of Narayan Mhatre society at Shivaji Nagar, Sector 12, at Koparkhairne.


Sunil Gawali, Police Inspector (crime), Koparkhairne police, said, “A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the contractor appointed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He has been booked for negligence (Section 304 (A)), act endangering life or personal safety of others (Section 336), causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (Section 337) and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (Section 338) of the Indian Penal Code. No arrest has been made.” The police have handed over Sunil’s body to his parents.
