A crash between a Land Rover and a white van left one person seriously injured.

A car crash at a central Auckland intersection has left one person seriously injured.

The two-vehicle crash was between a white Mitsubishi van and a Land Rover Discovery at the intersection of Newton Rd and Upper Queen Street at 8.40pm on Friday.

Auckland City senior fire station officer Chris Lind said a woman had been trapped in the van after the crash.

Firefighters worked to free a woman trapped in the wreckage of the crash.

Firefighters had managed to free her from the wreckage, he said.

Lind said another person was already in the care of ambulance when firefighters arrived at the scene. 

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and sitting in the middle of the intersection of Newton Rd and Upper Queen Street as police officers investigated the crash and canvassed the area for witnesses.

Police officers were canvassing the area for witnesses to the crash on Friday night.

A witness said she was visiting a friend's house when she heard a large noise outside followed by a woman "screaming and crying".

"We just heard the bang sound . . . just heard the noise."

A St John Ambulance alert said a further three people had not been injured but were also taken to hospital.

Witnesses said they didn't see the crash but hear a loud "bang".
