A trailer driver was injured after five vehicles piled up on Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday morning.

The accident took place near Khopoli, around 40km from Panvel.

According to the police, a trailer was coming towards Mumbai from Pune. Around 8am as it was crossing a curve, it was hit by another trailer from behind.

“The impact of the accident was such that the first trailer came to a horizontal position on the road. Three cars coming towards Mumbai hit the first trailer,” said a police officer from Khopoli police station.

“The driver of the second trailer suffered injuries in the accident. He was admitted to a nearby hospital. He is said to be stable. No one from the cars and the first trailer was injured,” the officer said.

There were traffic jam on the expressway following the accident. “We had to remove the vehicles from the road using cranes. The situation was normal after an hour,” said another police officer.

“The expressway normally sees more traffic on the weekends as people from both Mumbai and Pune travel out of town. Therefore, we tried to clear the traffic as early as possible using additional manpower,” he added.
