LUCKNOW: As heat wave conditions intensified in the state, the city on Saturday reeled under its hottest day in the month of May in the past 10 years. With weatherman predicting no change in weather pattern, the mercury mayhem is expected to continue on Sunday as well.
Maximum temperature at state Met department in Amausi soared to 44.8 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal. The heat within the city was more severe because of concrete structures all around and high pollution levels. Heat wave is declared when maximum temperature is five degrees Celsius or more above normal.

State Met director JP Gupta said no significant relief is expected on Sunday. Sky would be mainly clear with maximum and minimum temperatures around 43 and 24 degrees Celsius respectively. He, however, predicted possibility of thunderstorm next week by Tuesday-Wednesday, which would make temperatures drop by a couple of degrees. However, it will also turn weather sultry, adding to the woes of the people.
