An Edgewater man was arrested on 30 counts of possessing sexually explicit images of young girls on his computer, some of them as young as 5 years old.

William Thorne, 52, of Mango Tree Drive, was arrested Thursday on a warrant by Edgewater police after Volusia County sheriff's detectives in the agency's sex crimes unit executed a search warrant April 24 at Thorne’s home, sheriff's spokeswoman Laura Williams said.

Records show that Edgewater police arrested Thorne on his Volusia County Sheriff's Office warrant. He remained in the Volusia County Branch Jail held on $300,000 bail.

Detectives said they launched their investigation after receiving a tip in January from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which alerts local law enforcement agencies of possible incidents of sexual exploitation of children on the Internet.

During their search of Thorne’s home, detectives found pornographic images on his computer portraying girls ranging in age from 5 to 9, Williams said.
