Several “oohs” and “ahhs” could be heard from the crowd inside the DeKalb High School cafeteria as girls track and field coach Tywon Green listed Brimonet Buggs’ accomplishments.
Buggs, along with seven other DeKalb seniors, signed National Letters of Intent during a signing day ceremony at DeKalb on Thursday afternoon. Buggs, a 12-time All-Conference and six-time All-State athlete, is headed to Indiana State in the fall to continue her track career.
She anchored DeKalb’s 4x200-meter relay team, which won a state title last weekend at Eastern Illinois University. The Barbs placed first in the Class 3A 4x200 with a time of 1 minute, 38.59 seconds – a school record.
“I never actually thought I would get this far,” Buggs said. “Being a state champ, I never would’ve expected this to happen when I started running my freshman year. It’s amazing how much we’ve accomplished at DeKalb.
“It’s like I’m leaving a home here. They’re like family.”
Other DeKalb signees included Tremaine Thomas (Robert Morris University, football), Devin Williams (College of DuPage, football), Jenna Levine (Wartburg College, softball), Marcus Bobo (Kishwaukee College, basketball), Mikey Albert (Kishwaukee College, basketball), Avery Mertz (Kishwaukee College, soccer), Emma Rourke (Kishwaukee College, soccer), Jessa Henry (Davis and Elkins College, volleyball) Anna Friedlund (Waubonsee Community College, volleyball) and Kaylee McFarland (Aurora University, bowling).
