Gujarat to hold ‘Parjanya yagna’ for good monsoon

With ongoing water conservation campaign – ‘Sujlam Suflam Jal Abhiyan’ set to complete in one week, the BJP-ruled Gujarat Government has decided to hold ‘Parjanya Yagna’ in all 33 districts and eight major cities of the State on May 31st for good monsoon.

In all Yagna will be held at 41 places simultaneously to appease Rain God and water god — lord Indra and Lord Varuna respectively.

Couple of days ago Gujarat’s chief secretary JN Singh had stated that almost 80 per cent work related to water conservation campaign either completed or going at a rapid pace.

The month long campaign was initiated by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on the Foundation Day of Gujarat on May 1st. Now its completion would be celebrated with ‘Parjanya Yagn’. As per state government’s claim the campaign started with the support of hardly 2800 labourers and 450 social and religious organisations became India’s biggest water conservation drive as it progressed. Currently more than 2800 organisations and over 3. 25 labourers joined the movement to transform Gujarat from water scarce to water sufficient state, claimed the Rupani Government. Through the campaign Gujarat government is aiming to scoop out 11000 cubic feet of earth from 13000 village ponds and lakes as well as 32 rivers during the month of May to enhance storage capacity of rainwater to permanently solved drinking water problem.

The State Government took the decision to organise Yagn at 41 places simultaneously and post rituals ‘Prasad’ would also be distributed, said Gujarat’s deputy CM

Nitin Patel. CM Rupani and his Ministers including Deputy CM would take part in Yagns in different parts of the State. After completion of Yagn, public meetings would be held at all the venues where ministers will tell the success story of water conservation campaign.

It is worth mentioning that people in many parts of the state are facing acute water shortage in peak summer currently.

Water storage in 204 major dams of Gujarat has gone below 30 per cent of its capacity of 25,227 million cubic meters (MCM). Even Gujarat’s lifeline Sardar Sarovar Dam is filled nearly 30 per cent of its capacity.

If monsoon would delay in the state, there would be major problem for the government to cope up with the water scarcity problem.
