An international level martyrs’ memorial would be set up in Ambala Cantonment at a cost of Rs 173 crore. Directions have been issued to officers of the Public Works Department to start the construction work within two weeks, said Anil Vij, Haryana Health and Sports & Youth Affairs Minister on Thursday.

He said the memorial would not only help commemorate and recognize the sacrifices made by the martyrs during the freedom struggle but would also place Ambala Cantt on the world map.

“I have been pursuing this project in the Vidhan Sabha since long but it is the present government which has paved the way for it. For the construction of this memorial, 22 acres of land has been provided by the Municipal Corporation, Ambala, to the Information, Public Relations & Cultural Affairs Department along with Rs 173 crore for its construction. It would be constructed by the Public Works Department,” he added. Vij said that the spectacular memorial would be 70-foot high with 20-20-foot-high two walls along side on which details of the warriors of the 1857 revolution would be inscribed.

In addition, there would be six lawns bearing descriptions of the 1857 revolution warriors and the history of Ambala. There would also be a museum for the 1857 warriors from Haryana, said the Minister.

He added that the memorial would also house a library, an audio-video museum gallery and food court. Also, there would be covered parking space, children’s park, public facility, reflecting pool and cafeteria at the site.

Provision would also be made for laser show facility at night on the life and incidents of the warriors of the 1857 revolution, said he. A sub way would also be constructed for the convenience of visitors to the memorial. It would be a centre of attraction for people coming from around the world, Vij added.
