Shellfish discovered in Beth din-certified British Airways meal

The passenger is named Dennis Krushner.

He had designed the UK’s very first telephone interviewing software for microcomputers in the 1980’s and had complained to BA about this meal. The meal had been sourced in Lyon and bore a kosher certificate from the Lyon Beth Din.

The Mediterranean Salmon meal of Krushner comprised fish stock, two ingredients of which were mollusk and shellfish. And fish require scales and fins to be considered kosher.

Krushner mentioned that after he had complained to the airline authorities he was told that it is a shame that he disliked the meal as Jewish passengers eager to keep kosher should be aware that the British Airways ‘kosher’ meal might contain shellfish.

Later, A BA customer services representative wrote to Krushner mentioning they were unhappy with the fact that their passenger was dissatisfied with the food as meal service is important to BA, especially since the passenger had a special dietary requirement.

The food’s kosher certificate is certified by Dayan Yahia Teboul.

The Lyon Beth Din has been approached for comment.
