A system likely to become a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico in the next two days could bring with it tropical-storm-force winds and storm surge.
The system could affect areas of the northern Gulf Coast by late this weekend or early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center's update earlier Friday. The threat of rip currents will steadily increase along the Gulf Coast from Florida westward to Louisiana.
The projected paths of this system, which is east of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, range from Louisiana to the west coast of Florida. Rain will be the main impact of this storm for Southwest Florida.
It could be the first named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season.
