The 25-year-old man who was killed in southwest Edmonton early Thursday was shot while riding as a passenger in a taxi, says a news release from Edmonton police.
The man, whose identity police have confirmed as Harry Don Gillis, was shot while sitting in the back of a taxi cab, police said in a late Friday news release. There were no other passengers in the car.
The cab driver, who wasn't involved in the shooting, contacted the taxi company's dispatch and brought Gillis to hospital.
He died there at about 6 a.m. Thursday. An autopsy conducted Friday confirmed Gillis died of gunshot wounds.
Edmonton court records show Gillis had a criminal record that dated back to 2012 and included convictions for aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance.
Officers responded at about 1 a.m. Thursday to reports of shots fired in the area of 111th Street and 23rd Avenue, police said in a news release.
Detectives are investigating the death as a homicide, and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
