Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo impressed in practice at the Monaco GP

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes have “things to work on” after Red Bull secured a one-two in both practice sessions ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen ruled in yesterday’s opening day in Monte Carlo. F1.com reports that Australian driver Ricciardo was “in the mood to impress” after setting a new track record in the afternoon practice session.

In free practice two Ricciardo was fastest ahead of teammate Verstappen while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel - who won in Monaco last year - was third and Hamilton fourth.

Championship leader Hamilton knows that Red Bull and Ferrari will provide a formidable challenge on Sunday and the British driver admitted it was a tough day in the first and second practice sessions.

He told Sky Sports: “I said that the Red Bulls were going to be quick, which they naturally were. I’d say we struggled a little bit more. Struggled, as expected.

“We’ve got some things to work on and we’re not completely in the dark, much better than we were last year. But we’ve got a lot of ground to cover and pick up if we want to be in the fight for the win.”

The teams and drivers have a “rest day” today ahead of tomorrow’s Monaco GP qualifying session which starts at 2pm.
