Shutterbugs stare at the stars for WA astrophotography exhibition

Anybody who has gazed at the night sky and seen the stars’ artistic potential will be happy to know they’re not alone.

The John Curtin Gallery at Curtin University is hosting an exhibition of astrophotography – which entails, as the name suggests, pictures of deep space, planets and landscapes with the starlit night sky emblazoned above.

The exhibition, which opened Friday, is the culmination of the 2018 Astrofest photography competition.

Judges, including representatives from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, awarded prizes in categories such as Best Astrophoto, Best Timelapse and Best New Talent.

Astrophotography curator John Goldsmith said the exhibition had grown steadily since its inception in 2009 and this year attracted 224 entries.

“Many of the entries show extraordinary detail and colour using telescope-based imaging combined with the power of sophisticated image processing,” Dr Goldsmith said.

“We are extremely lucky in [WA] to have so many fantastic locations to choose from for astrophotography.”

The exhibition will show in the Access Gallery at the John Curtin Gallery from May 25 to June 24 before going on tour through regional WA for the rest of the year.
