The Red Sox have designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment, the team has announced.

The team reportedly told the first baseman of the plan Friday morning, which opened a spot on the roster for second baseman Dustin Pedroia. The Boston Globe was first with the news.

Ramirez, 34, has $15 million remaining on his salary this season. The team now has seven days to trade or release Ramirez, who's hitting .254 with six home runs and 29 RBI.

On his Twitter account Friday afternoon, Ramirez tweeted "Thank you #RedSoxNation. It’s been real. Love you always"

Originally signed by Boston as an international free agent in July 2000, Ramirez has appeared in 1,652 major league games with the Red Sox (2005, ’15-18), Marlins (2006-12), and Dodgers (2012-14), batting .290 (1,825-for-6,300) with 374 doubles, 32 triples, 269 home runs, 909 RBI, 1,045 runs scored, and 281 stolen bases.
