Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy wins trust vote with 116 votes, BJP stages walkout

HD Kumaraswamy became 30th Chief Minister of Karnataka.

BANGALORE Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy won the trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly on Friday with 116 votes. With this, the long drawn battle of ascendancy on seat of power ended, paving the way for Kumaraswamy to come back to governance.

As a mark of protest, the BJP MLAs staged a walkout before the trust vote was taken.

The motion expressing confidence in the Kumaraswamy government was adopted by voice vote in the presence of JD (S)-Congress coalition.

Leader of Opposition B S Yeddyurappa made a sharp attack on Kumaraswamy, describing the ruling coalition as “unholy”.

However, in his speech, Kumaraswamy said his government would carry out development for all sections of society together, and it also would take into consideration suggestions made by the Opposition parties.

Later the Chief Minister held a meeting for cabinet expansion in which Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwar, Siddaramaih and others were present.

On Wednesday Kumaraswamy was sworn in as 30th Chief Minister of Karnataka. Kumaraswamy is heading coalition government of the Congress and JD (S).

Earlier in the day, Congress MLA KR Ramesh was elected the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

On May 17, BJP’s B S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, however, he had to step down two days later in the face of imminent. He did not go through the grind of floor test.

The BJP is the single largest party in the assembly with 104 MLAs.

The 224-member assembly has an effective strength of 221, as election for Jayanagar seat was countermanded following the death of the BJP candidate and deferred in RR Nagar over allegations of electoral malpractices.
