Life in Thuthukkudi, where thirteen people lost their lives in the protests demanding the closure of the Sterlirte Copper Smelter company, is slowly returning to normalcy, with bus services resuming in phases.
The district administration has said that various steps are being initiated to ensure availability of goods and services in the normal mode.
However, hotels are not open and the state government’s Amma restaurants are catering on popular demand to some extent.
Internet services like Facebook, email, Whatsapp etc are still not available in Thuthukudi and neighboring districts of Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli. Meanwhile, the dawn to dusk protest called by opposition parties in Tamil nadu has drawn partial attention in many parts of the state.
However, it is has evoked some response in including from Chennai, Villupuram, Tirunelveli, Tanjore.
Opposition leader M K Stalin, who lead the agitation in Madurandakam in Kanchipuram district, has been arrested with other protesters.
Meanwhile, 20 companies of Tamil Nadu State commando units, with 80 members in each group, have been deployed in Thuthukkudi.
Special police teams, numbering over 500, have also been posted in the Anna Nagar and Muthiahpiram areas in Thuthukudi.
