Williamstown, Mass.

Scott Berliner is 43, an age that some would consider past peak as a professional golfer.

There are no indications that he is slowing down his game.

Berliner, an assistant pro at Hiland in Queensbury, won his eighth consecutive Northeastern New York PGA Stroke Play Championship title Wednesday, beating Eric Mabee by two shots at the Waubeeka Golf Links.

"You get older, this game gets harder," said Mabee, the 35-year-old head pro at Pittsfield (Mass.), "so he's done well to stay at the top for this long."

Carrying a two-stroke lead into the final round of the 36-hole event, Berliner shot an even-par 71 to finish the tournament at 3-under 139.

With his eighth in a row, Berliner tied Mike Small of Illinois for most consecutive Stroke Play championships among the PGA of America's 41 sections.

"Eventually I'm not going to win it," said Berliner, who won the title the first year he was eligible to play in 2011. "It's like, 'Is this the year?' It's fun to have my name on the trophy. The trophy's phenomenal. It's got (Gene) Sarazen's name on there. It's got on it what I want to consider the legends of our section."

Sarazen, after a storied career in which he won all four major championships, owned a farm in Germantown when he won the 1966 Stroke Play at age 64.

Berliner has a ways to go to reach that age, but he said he feels confident playing in what he considers the Northeastern New York PGA's biggest major.

"I still enjoy working at it," said Berliner, a Hadley-Luzerne graduate. "It sounds weird, but I'm getting better as far as managing my game, managing my emotions. I was on the edge today, but I reeled myself in pretty good, which four or five years ago I probably would have broken a wedge or two."

He had opportunity to unleash some frustration on the par-5 15th, where his second shot landed in some fescue far to the right of the green. There were 12 seconds remaining in the five minutes Berliner had to find his ball when playing partner Terence Manziano spotted it.

After pitching the ball to the fringe, Berliner chipped up, then two-putted for a bogey 6.

"It was lucky, but I still made bogey," Berliner said. "Worst case, I go back, drop, I have a chance to knock it on and two-putt for a 6. You never know."

That hole got Mabee to within a shot of the lead, but Berliner expanded the lead to two with a birdie on the par-5 17th.

Mabee, who also finished second last year, couldn't put much pressure on Berliner, carding nine pars on the back side.

Scott Battiste of Eagle Crest, shooting consecutive rounds of par 71, was alone in third.

"Every time he hits what we'll call a bad shot, he's awesome at recovering," Battiste said. "You've got to go get him. He's not coming back to you. I knew that, but I couldn't get it done."

"He just knows how to shoot a score," said fourth-place Dal Daily, who won four successive titles from 1999 to 2002. "I can shoot a score sometimes, but he shoots a score every time. I think I might shoot 68 when I go out and play, but I might shoot 76. He shoots 68 every day. He hits it long, scores well. He's good."
