A 13-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after he collided with a car early Thursday in Cape Coral, police said.
The crash closed the northbound lanes of Del Prado Boulevard at the intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway in Cape Coral for more than four hours, reopening about 10:30 a.m.
Cape Coral police said Jacob C. Sparks, 24, of Fort Myers, was headed north on Del Prado while the cyclist was headed east on the parkway, crossing the southbound lanes of Del Prado on the edge of the crosswalk.
When the cyclist crossed the northbound lanes, Sparks' Toyota Tundra collided with him, sending the cyclist and his bike across the hood, police said. The cyclist was carried and thrown 217 feet from the point of impact.
Police said Sparks called 911 and waited for police and medics to arrive. Witnesses indicated that the light was green for Sparks, and the cyclist was not wearing a helmet and had on dark clothing. His bicycle was not equipped with a headlight or tail light.
