First-ever elevated corridor in steel on VST road approved

To improve traffic flow between Indira Park and Hindi Mahavidyalaya

The government has approved the GHMC’s proposal for construction of the first-ever elevated corridor to be built in steel, between Lower Tankbund and VST junction.

The project proposed under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) is expected to improve the traffic flow on the connecting road between Indira Park and Hindi Mahavidyalaya.

On Thursday, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department has issued orders giving administrative sanction for taking up the works with an expenditure of ₹426 crore, with the rider that the cost would be borne by GHMC.

As per the GHMC proposal, the project will be taken in two phases, the first for construction of an elevated corridor between Indira Park and VST Junction, and the subsequent phase for another second level independent flyover, also in steel, between Ramnagar and Baghlingampally.

The elevated corridor of 2.61 kilometres will include main corridor of 2.09 kilometres, and two ramps to get on and off the flyover. It will help commuters avoid four junctions, namely, NTR Stadium, Ashok Nagar crossroads, RTC crossroads, and Baghlingampally junction.

It will be a bidirectional, four lane way costing ₹350 crore. The proposed width varies between 22.2 and 36.6 metres depending on the land acquisition.

The second and smaller flyover between Ram Nagar and Baghlingampally will be bidirectional and three-lane way of 840 metres, with the proposed width varying between 21.4 metres and 33.6 metres.

The estimated expenditure is ₹76 crore. In both cases, the project cost does not include land acquisition cost.

Over 12,300 square metres of land belonging to industries and institutions will need to be acquired in total for both the projects, while GHMC land of 5,762 square metres is available.

Tenders will be called for in Engineering-Procurement-Construction mode, pending land acquisition.
