Nipah outbreak: farmers told not to panic

‘No case of contracting virus from farm animals reported’

The Animal Husbandry Department on Thursday called upon farmers not to panic in the wake of Nipah outbreak as no case of contracting the virus from farm animals had been confirmed in the country.

The department also opened a round-the-clock helpline (04971-2732151) to clarify farmers’ doubts and examine suspected claims, in addition to the existing State-level observation panel.

An official communication from the department said farmers should maintain personal hygiene after caring animals. Also, they should avoid eating fruits suspected to be bitten by bats.

They have also been advised to be careful while dealing with animals suffering from respiratory ailments. In such cases, help should be sought from nearby veterinary hospitals, the communication said.
