Accused kidnapper of Gold Coast boy faces extradition to Queensland
Updated
The second alleged kidnapper of a 12-year-old boy on the Gold Coast earlier this month will be extradited to Queensland to face charges.
Sunny Zhang, 20, appeared briefly by video link in Sydney's Central Local Court on Thursday morning where a magistrate granted a request from police to extradite him to the Gold Coast.
Mr Zhang is the second person to be arrested in connection with the kidnapping of the boy from Mudgeeraba in the Gold Coast hinterland on May 11.
Police allege the boy was grabbed off the street, bundled into a car and held for ransom with a bag over his head.
He was found a day later in the NSW town of Grafton in what police allege was an SUV belonging to Mr Zhang's father, Zhen Jie Zhang.
Zhen Jie Zhang was arrested earlier this month and is facing multiple charges over the alleged kidnapping.
Sunny Zhang turned himself into Cabramatta Police Station earlier this week and will fly to the Gold Coast with detectives tomorrow and be taken to the Southport watch house before appearing in Southport Magistrates Court.
He was supported in court this morning by two people believed to be his mother and cousin.
On Monday, Gold Coast detectives said they had identified Sunny Zhang as a person of interest in the case and believed he was hiding out in Sydney.
They added that the child was as good as can be expected after his ordeal and was getting lots of support from his family and school.
