NEW PHILADELPHIA A second defendant has entered a not-guilty plea in connection with about $20,000 worth of money missing from the Sandy Valley Fraternal Order of Eagles lodge.
Wendy S. Piccin, 52, of 1420 Wainwright Road SE, has been indicted on two counts of grand theft.
Also facing the same charges in the case is David McCreery, 59, of 8656 Fairview Road, in Sandy Township. He has also entered not guilty pleas.
McCreery, the former secretary of the club, and Piccin are alleged to have conspired to commit theft, according to Scott Deedrick, assistant county prosecutor.
Deedrick said the theft was discovered in an audit that was triggered by a notice from the Internal Revenue Service indicating some employees' withholding taxes had not been paid.
The thefts occurred between Jan. 6, 2015, and May 2, 2016, according to the indictment.
The Sandy Valley Fraternal Order of Eagles lodge No. 3228 is at 4296 Cross Roads Road NE, Sandyville.
McCreery is listed in state records as one of three people who incorporated the nonprofit in 1998.
The case is assigned to Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Judge Edward O’Farrell.
