Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Universal Service Obligation Fund supported scheme to provide mobile services at 4,072 tower locations in Left Wing Extremism affected areas.
Briefing reporters on the decisions of the Cabinet in New Delhi, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the network will be used by the security personnel deployed in the naxal affected areas.
The Cabinet also gave its approval for the Implementation of a Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the North Eastern Region in Meghalaya.
In another important decision, the Cabinet approved an ordinance to set up the country's first national Sports University in Manipur.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, a bill to set up the University in Imphal is already pending in Parliament.
He said, the State government has already allocated land for the proposed University. Mr Prasad said, things will start moving fast once the President signs the ordinance.
