BETHEL — The town has appointed several residents to a commission that is examining changing the charter.

The charter was last revised in 2013 and must be reviewed every five years.

The Board of Selectmen last week appointed Joyce Hess, Melanie O' Brien, John Lennon, Sharon Straiton, Patrick Perrefort, Theresa Letellier and Nicholas Hoffman to the commission.

The commission could examine rules that dictate who can serve on certain boards and committees or change the requirement to hold a referendum for expenditures costing more than $1 million, First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker had said when the commission was established last year.

The commission will meet with departments, boards and other stakeholders, as well as holding public hearings before and after developing recommendations.

Eventually, the Board of Selectmen could approve these suggestions and residents would then vote on them in a referendum.
