Rangers hire BU's Quinn as head coach

NEW YORK — The New York Rangers have hired Boston University's David Quinn as their new head coach.

Quinn replaces Alain Vigneault, who was fired hours after the Rangers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

The 51-year-old Quinn coached Boston University to four NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons, including a trip to the national title game in 2015.

More NHL: The Buffalo Sabres have signed Swedish prospect forward Rasmus Asplund to a three-year entry-level contract. Asplund, 20, was selected by Buffalo in the second round of the 2016 NHL draft.

Arrest: Police say former Met and Phillie Lenny Dykstra put a gun to his New Jersey Uber driver's head when the driver declined to change the trip's destination. Linden police say Dykstra was arrested early Wednesday outside police headquarters after the driver stopped and ran out of the car. Police say they found cocaine and marijuana among Dykstra's belongings. The 55-year-old former All-Star is charged with making terroristic threats and drug offenses. He is due back in court next month. Dykstra has served prison time for crimes including bankruptcy fraud and money laundering.

Auto racing: Jeff Gordon has been selected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, receiving 96 percent of the votes from the Hall of Fame committee. Car owners Jack Roush and Roger Penske also were selected, along with drivers Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. Both died in 1993 — Kulwicki at 38 in a plane crash and Allison three months later in a helicopter crash at 32.

Cycling: Elia Viviani sprinted to his fourth victory of the Giro d'Italia and Simon Yates maintained his hold on the leader's pink jersey after the 17th stage.

ESPYs: ESPN announced that Danica Patrick, who is ending her auto racing career with Sunday's Indianapolis 500, will host this year's ESPYs and become the first woman to do so. The network's 26th annual awards show is scheduled for July 18 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
