CEDAR RAPIDS — A 26-year-old woman faces 20 charges after sparking a high-speed chase that ended with a foot pursuit after she crashed into a southwest apartment building, according to police.
The incident began at 9:37 a.m., Tuesday, near Metro High School, 1212 Seventh St. SE, when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop for outstanding warrants, Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said. The driver, Daisha Rae Gonzalez, 26, did not stop, and instead fled, using alleyways and blowing through stop signs to avoid police, Buelow said.
Buelow said police called off the chase because of the “reckless way that the suspect was attempting to elude.” Police found her vehicle shortly thereafter crashed into an apartment building at 173 16th Ave. SW, he said.
The suspect attempted to flee on foot, but with the assistance of a police K-9, they track her down, Buelow said. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center and then to Linn County Jail after being discharged from the hospital.
Police charged Gonzalez, who doesn’t have a listed address, with felony eluding, nine counts of failing to obey traffic control devices, driving the wrong way on a two-way highway, failure to maintain control, driving while barred, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to provide proof of insurance, possession of methamphetamine, and a warrant for second degree theft and escape.
