DUTA protests outside UGC office against 'forced autonomy' to clgs

The Teachers Association (DUTA) today protested outside the office of the (UGC) here over reports of forced autonomy to DU colleges.

DUTA said the (DU)has its own statutory autonomy inscribed in its founding Act, and any move that "violates its founding act, statutes and ordinances is legally tenable".

"We held a demonstration outside the UGC office while its Meeting was on. Senior UGC officials informed us this morning that the item on granting autonomy to

St Stephen's and has been dropped from the agenda of the meeting.

"This deferral is, however, no guarantee against the Centre's plan to privatise the public-funded higher educational institutions," he said.

Ray said the protest would continue, including boycott of evaluation, until the UGC assures that autonomy will not be forced on colleges.

He also asked the Commission to withdraw its March 5 notification on roster, and restore the status quo on reservation in appointments.

The DUTA added that the advertised posts in the Delhi University should also be filled immediately.
