York launches plans for billion-pound tourism industry

Now the ambitious cathedral city has outlined plans to build on its appeal and create a billion-pound tourism industry for the next 10 years, attracting Chinese holidaymakers and encouraging tourists who have visited already for extended stay.

Currently, average tourists spend three nights in York. But now the tourism board of Yorl wants people to spend four to five nights in the city while they head out to explore the Yorkshire Dales and the Moors as well as York itself.

The tourism plan of the board is not to encourage a huge boom in tourism numbers, but to focus on markets that tend to spend more when they are on holiday, such as the Chinese, which is a key emerging market and the Americans.

Chinese nationals spend an average of £405 per head when they visit the UK, placing them in third place as the biggest-spending tourists, after Nigerians and those visiting from the Gulf States.

Visit York will be working with Chinese tour operators to encourage them to add the city into their itineraries and holiday packages.

A visitor guide has also been launched in Mandarin, putting together tailored itineraries for Chinese visitors.
