Class X results: Coimbatore placed at 15th position

Of the 40,307 students who appeared for the exam, 38,638 cleared it

As much as 95.86 % of the students who appeared for the Class X public examination in March-April this year cleared the examination in Coimbatore District.

According to officials in the School Education Department, the 2018 result is the lowest in the last three years. In 2016, the district had a pass percentage of 96.22, putting it at the 10th position among districts in the State. In 2017, the pass percentage was 96.42, placing Coimbatre in the 11th place in the State. In 2018, the district is placed in the 15th position.

Of the 40,307 students who appeared for the exam, 38,638 cleared it. As in the past, this year too, the percentage of girls who had cleared the exam – 97.60 – was higher than that of boys – 94.10.

The number of students, who had scored full marks in subjects, had also come down drastically this year as against last year.

The officials said the number of students who had scored the maximum in social science in 2017 was 3,543; this year it was a mere 293. Likewise, the number of students who had secured 100 out of 100 in science in 2017 was 1,239; this year it had come down to 76.

In mathematics too the situation was no different in that in 2017, 1,051 students had scored full marks; in 2018 it was only 26. In language there was no student who had scored full marks this year; last year five students had secured the maximum marks.

The School Education Department officials said of the students who had cleared the examination, 629 had scored over 481 marks; 3,741 students between 451-480 marks; 3,746 students between 426 and 450 marks; 3,773 students between 401 and 425 marks.

In the schools run by the Coimbatore Corporation, the pass percentage was 89.63. Of the 1,890 students who had appeared for the examination, 1,694 cleared it. As in the district, the pass percentage of girls at 91.85 was higher than that of boys at 79.17.

Two Corporation schools – Corporation Higher Secondary School, Siddhapudur, and Corporation Higher Secondary School, Peelamedu - saw only 50 % and 46.81 % of the students pass respectively.

Education wing officials in the Corporation blamed the students for the poor performance and said there was no shortage of staff in the two schools.

As many as 47 inmates from Coimbatore Central Prison cleared the examination, said prison superintendent M. Senthilkumar. He said that 49 prisoners had written the examination. The top score achieved this year is 409.
