Quiz: Who said it - Donald Trump or Elon Musk?

One is an isolated cartoon supervillain-style billionaire figure making increasingly grand and outlandish pronouncements on everything from space, climate change, and fake media, to the future of mankind itself. And the other is Elon Musk.

But can you tell what the increasingly quirky Musk has been saying from what Donald Trump has been saying. Take our quiz and find out ...

"We're getting very big in space and we are seriously thinking of the Space Force."

On more than one occasion since becoming president, Trump has suggested adding a Space Force to the traditional army, navy and air force branches of the US military.

"My family fears that the Russians will assassinate me."

Musk said this in 2015 while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Trump seems to avoid mentioning the Russians unless he is talking about what he calls 'a witch hunt'.

"There should be a constitutional amendment to redo the tax code every 10 years."

Musk tweeted this in 2013, during a debate about whether there should be a carbon tax. Musk has argued in favour of such a change. Trump is not so keen.

"The US rocket that blew up and crashed yesterday is emblematic of the United States under Obama. Nothing works, be it a rocket or website."

Trump tweeted this in 2014, after an Antares rocket, destined for the International Space Station, exploded shortly after launch. He had changed his tune by 2018, tweeting: 'Congratulations @ElonMusk and @SpaceX on the successful #FalconHeavy launch. This achievement, along with @NASA’s commercial and international partners, continues to show American ingenuity at its best!'

"None of my companies buy advertising or pay famous people to fake endorse."

Musk tweeted this assertion in March 2018. A web service called Twitteraudit estimates that about 20% of @realDonaldTrump's 52 million Twitter followers on Twitter are fake.

"John Menard of Menards home improvement stores in the Midwest treats employees horribly – should they form a union?"

Trump tweeted this, apparently in favour of unionisation, in 2013. Since then he has been rather less keen on unions. The unionisation of Musk's workforce has been in and out of the news, with his girlfriend, Grimes, recently causing a storm by tweeting about it.

"Many in America don't realise how proud they should be of the legal system. Not perfect, but nowhere is the cause of justice better served."

Musk, who is no stranger to legal action, was defending the US justice system in February 2017. Donald Trump, in his tweets about the Mueller probe, has been less complimentary about the whole setup.

"The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive."

Trump has long been critical of theories about manmade global warming. Musk, on the other hand, argues that humans need to radically shift their energy-use patterns to avoid environmental damage. But then he also wants to go and live on Mars so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"The holier-than-thou hypocrisy of big media companies who lay claim to the truth, but publish only enough to sugarcoat the lie, is why the public no longer respects them."

This was one of a series of tweets Musk has sent over the last two days talking about media trust and accuracy. He has said he is planning to launch a service to crowdsource trustworthiness ratings for journalists and news outlets. Donald Trump's views on 'the failing, fake-news media' are well known.

"Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest – and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault."

While you can read reams and reams of speculation online about Musk's IQ level - fanboys estimate it is anywhere between 145 and 175 - the 'losers and haters' line is the clue that this one was Donald. We don't know Donald's IQ either, but we assume it is definitely bigly. Very bigly.

"To be blunt, people would vote for me. They just would. Why? Maybe because I'm so good looking."

Trump made this claim in the New York Times in 1999. It turned out he was partly right, people did vote for him. It may not been because of his looks though – who can tell?

"You can tell it’s real because it looks so fake."

Musk was addressing criticism that his SpaceX company had faked footage of their rocket experiments. He said if the footage had been done using CGI, it would have looked better.
