Leonardo announced successfull completion of the first flight campaign to demonstrate satellite control of a European-built MALE-class (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) drone.
A team comprising Telespazio and Piaggio Aerospace carried out the activity using a remotely-piloted P.1HH HammerHead aircraft as the test bed, developing and integrating capabilities that will enable drones to safely fly in unsegregated air space, beyond the range of ground-based radio coverage (called BRLOS - Beyond Radio Line Of Sight).
The campaign was carried out at Birgi airport in Trapani, Italy in order to evaluate the efficacy of the satellite technology for various dual-use applications under realistic conditions. The flights are in line with the objectives of the DeSIRE II European research project, led by Telespazio and jointly initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and European Defence Agency (EDA).
DeSIRE II will support European standardisation and regulatory activities in the drone sector.
Telespazio, a subsidiary of Leonardo and a leader in Space services, has developed a two-way satellite communication network which was used during the flight campaign. Control data from the ground station was transmitted to remotely operate the P.1HH and its on-board sensors and systems, while data collected by the drone during flight was returned to the ground station via the same network. The system made use of the Athena-Fidus satellite resources, managed by Telespazio’s Fucino Space Centre.
The first full scale model of the European Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft (MALE RPAS) was unveiled today during a ceremony held at the 2018 ILA Berlin Air Show, at Schönefeld airport. First unmanned aerial system designed for flight in non-segregated airspace, its characteristics will include mission modularity for operational superiority in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, both wide area and in-theatre, Dassault said in a statement Wednesday
Four European firms – Elettronica, Hensoldt, Indra and Thales have signed a memorandum of agreement to provide MALE (Medium Altitude, Long Endurance) RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) program with a future-proof ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) function. The companies have agreed in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, confirming their common goal to offer a coherent ISTAR functional chain for the MALE RPAS comprising all elements from sensors and computing through data processing and communications
A twin prop engine configuration has been selected for the European MALE RPAS (Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) as the basis for further trade-off studies until the upcoming Systems Requirements Review (SRR). Airbus Defence and Space, Dassault Aviation and Leonardo have provided a substantial set of data that allowed the participating nations including France, Germany, Italy and Spain to agree on the basic remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) configuration and several main design drivers for the system, after an intensive 10 months trade-off period
The contract for the definition study of the European MALE RPAS (Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) Programme, assigned to Airbus, Dassault Aviation and Leonardo-Finmeccanica has been launched at a kick-off meeting chaired by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). The two-year definition study starts from September 2016
France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement to confirm their support for the implementation of MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) drone by 2025. The joint proposal was issued by the defense ministers of the three nations, French Jean-Yves Le Drian, German Ursula Von Der Leyen and Italian Roberta Pinotti and has officially announced to jointly conduct a developmental phase study of the drone
